I've been playing this game somewhat obsessively for a while, figured it was about time for me to share some tricks I have picked up for anyone that may not know them!
- When you first spawn into a map, feel free to immediately kill yourself into a larger blob if you see no pellets around you to eat. It is almost always faster to spawn into another part of the map than to go on a 2 minute trek across barren wastelands full of predators to find food.
- Know when to give up on food, you can waste a lot of time chasing around blobs much smaller than you that are not worth splitting for. At the same time, if there is nothing else near you worth moving towards, there is no reason not to follow and hope that an opportunity to split yourself for multiple blobs presents itself. The micro-decision-making is something you will develop a feel for as you play a lot anyways, so don't sweat it too much!
- If you are a very large blob split into two sections, you can maneuver yourself straight through a virus by guiding it carefully between your two blobs. Only the very center of a virus will split you. This is something I highly recommend practicing, it is invaluable for escaping slow speed chases when you are low on the leaderboard. And it looks pretty damn impressive to boot.
- Similarly, no matter your size, it is possible to maneuver directly through the middle of a two part blob that is bigger than you. You only have a few pixels of leeway, but boy is it worth it just to imagine the look on someone face when you escape a trap by doing this.
- Go for gusto when you are small, play safe when you are big! This is probably obvious to most, but splitting can be extremely costly when you are big enough to be a target for the largest blobs on the map and too slow to escape from them. Being in two, slow moving parts will also make it easier for experienced players to control your movement straight into an inescapable situation.
- See someone on top of another blob, but barely too small to gobble them up? Press w a few times to give them a leg up if you can afford it. They will usually remember and return the favor later if they can.
- In the same vein; Have you hit a virus, are too small to live, but too bulky to escape? Pinned into a corner with no hope of life? Don't take that death honorably, feed every part of you that you can into a single, smallish blob. Bonus points if you help them catch some other incidental blobs in the sudden fat'splosion. If you are dead in the water anyways it always helps to make a friend who owes you a favor.
- Pick a funny name, rather than a generic or offensive one. It positively affects how other players make decisions regarding you.
Bonus Mind-Games Section!
- Always be aware of the possibility of splitting directly through a virus when you are just large enough that half of your mass will not absorb it. Almost nobody will see this coming.
- If you are a large blob split into two pieces; even though you cannot use small sections of yourself to push the larger sections of yourself around at faster speeds anymore, the speed at which you can force a small section of yourself to orbit around a larger one is much greater than the speed at which that smaller section could move by itself. Use this to surprise people. This takes very precise and practiced cursor positioning to do.
- When you are a super-massive blob, smaller blobs will judge the speed at which you are moving and move exactly as close to you as they think they are safely able to. Use this to your advantage. Place your cursor close to your center to intentionally move slower than your max speed. Smaller blobs moving by will misjudge this as your maximum speed and make decisions regarding how close they can get to you accordingly. Then you speed up and surprise them.
